What is a poster? A poster is usually a combination of image and text printed on paper. It is designed to convey a message that is intelligible at a glance. The visual is striking and the injunction is clear, even intimidating sometimes, whether or not the slogan contains a verb : «(Visit) Cairo.» «(See)Hamilton.» I call my paintings «posters» because they fulfill those criteria. They are made on paper, and most use some printmaking techniques – although each is unique. The colors and markings are bold, sometimes violent, a little like the graffitis that dot urban walls, alongside the posters. Most of my «posters» incorporate verbal messages. I want them to point a finger at the viewers and intimidate them a little («I Want You…») The problem is : What are the viewers ordered to do? For the message seems authoritative but it is nonsensical, or at the very least non-syntaxic. This mystery forces the viewers to go back to the purely visual aspect of the work to find the answer but they will inevitably fail. It could probably be said, then, that my posters are advertisements for abstract art : «What do I see?»
